Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde supports BJP's decision on CM post, amid speculation and alliance tensions, ahead of oath-taking ceremony.
Maharashtra’s caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, on Sunday (December 1, 2024), reaffirmed his support for the BJP’s decision on the CM’s post.
Speaking in his native village of Dare in Satara district, the Shiv Sena leader once again said that he stands by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s choice. “I have already made my stand clear. The decision taken by the BJP leadership will be acceptable to me and the Shiv Sena,” Mr. Shinde said.
Mr. Shinde, who has been recuperating from a brief illness, dismissed rumours of dissatisfaction over government formation. “Why should there be any confusion? I always come to my village. Our responsibility has grown due to the massive mandate given by the people,” he added.
Mr. Shinde also said he comes to his village regularly and wondered why should there be any confusion (over his visit) when he cleared his stand on the CM’s post last week.
BJP leader Raosaheb Danve, in a separate statement, said that the name of the new CM had been finalised, awaiting only confirmation from the party’s top brass. “Even the people know who the next CM will be,” Mr. Danve hinted, fuelling speculation that Devendra Fadnavis, the former CM and Mr. Shinde’s deputy in the outgoing government, is the frontrunner.
Amid the uncertainty, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray launched a scathing attack on the Mahayuti alliance, calling the delay in government formation an “insult” to Maharashtra.
The Shiv Sena leader, who headed to his native village on Friday (November 29, 2024) amid speculation that he was not happy with the way the new government was shaping up, had taken ill and will return to Mumbai on Sunday evening, an aide said earlier in the day.

“Walk for Equality was aimed at creating a movement to crush the forces attempting to divide the people along religious line, said Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) leader Vaiko. Concluding his 140-kilometre ‘Samathuva nadai payanam’ from Tiruchi to Madurai on Monday, Mr. Vaiko said, “The Hindutva forces are actively attempting to drive a wedge between communities through various incidents, most notably the Thirupparankundram deepam controversy, using identity-based politics to achieve their divisive motives.”
