Lord Kallazhagar embarks on journey to Madurai during Chithirai festival, attracting thousands of devotees along the way.
Lord Kallazhagar, the presiding deity of Sundararaja Perumal Temple in Azhagarkoil, began his journey to Madurai as part of the Chithirai festival on Saturday evening.
Thousands of devotees from far and near descended on Azhagarkoil to witness Lord Kallazhagar as he embarked on his way to Madurai. The deity, in the attire of a common man, was brought out of the sanctum sanctorum at around 5.15 p.m. on a golden palanquin.
Amid the bursting of firecrackers, applause from devotees, who danced to the beats of drums, Lord Kallazhagar, after receiving the utharavu (order) from Pathinettam Padi Karuppasamy, was carried out of the temple on the golden palanquin around 5:30 pm.
The devotees, who had made a vow to the deity, dressed up as Lord Kallazhagar and carried the flame torches, blessed and told fortune to the people. The devotees enthusiastically clicked photographs and selfies with the deity and also shot videos.
The devotees followed the deity on his way to Madurai as he exited the temple premises at around 7 p.m.. The procession made halts at the ‘mandagapadis’ in Poigaikaraipatti, Kallandhiri, Appan Tirupathi and Sundararajanpatti. The halts would also be made at Kadachanendal, Surya Nagar and Surveyor Colony and would reach Moondramavadi for ‘Ethirsevai’ at about 6 a.m. on Sunday.
The authorities said the procession would halt at around 470 mandagapadis. Lord Kallazhagar would enter the Vaigai at around 5.45 a.m. on Monday. Arrangements had been made for the devotees to watch the proceedings. LED screens were being installed for the devotees to watch the proceedings.
A large number of police personnel had been deployed on the temple premises to manage the crowd. People distributed food packets containing tamarind rice, sambar rice, tomato rice, ven pongal, sundal, water bottles, buttermilk and juices to the devotees along Azhagarkoil Road.
