A week-long exhibition of artworks by renowned illustrator and artist Maruthi was inaugurated at Andril Heritage Art Gallery at V.S. Chellam Century Hall here on Tuesday. It marks the first exclusive showcase of his work in Tamil Nadu.
The exhibition, open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily till June 15, offers free entry to visitors. Prints of Maruthi’s artwork are available for sale, priced between ₹600 and ₹800, with and without mounts.
Announcing the event as a tribute from the Madurai artist community, the organisers also introduced short-term heritage art courses to be conducted by the gallery both online and offline.
The exhibition features a wide range of Maruthi’s distinctive works, celebrated for their expressive detailing, use of vibrant colour, and evocative portrayal of human emotion. His mastery in facial expressions, costumes, and lighting is a recurring highlight across the collection. Notably, the artist’s strength in poster colours is evident in many pieces.
Among the works on display are sketches of women adorned with traditional jewellery, executed in a realistic style with simple brushstrokes and nuanced lighting. Subjects on display include mythological figures such as Cleopatra to everyday moments such as a birthday celebration, a newly-wed couple in Kodaikanal, a pair of men on horseback, showcasing versatility and narrative depth.
