Later start to the school year this fall for P.E.I. students

Students in Prince Edward Island will start school a few days later than originally planned this fall.
In a news release Thursday, the provincial government said the first day of classes for the 2026-27 school year will now be Tuesday, Sept. 8.
The original school calendar had students returning on Friday, Sept. 4, just before the Labour Day long weekend.
The province said the change comes after a review of the two-year school calendar that was released last year by the Department of Education and Early Years.
“Labour Day falls as late as it possibly can in 2026 and that meant in order to meet the required number of classroom days for Island students, we had them starting on the Friday before the long weekend,” Education Minister Robin Croucher was quoted as saying in the release.
“However, after discussions with various stakeholders including the P.E.I. Teachers’ Federation and CUPE, we moved the start date to the Tuesday after Labour Day and moved two professional development days for staff to the week before the long weekend. This will ensure that students achieve the required number of days and that the normal expectations of parents and caregivers will be met.”
