The Trump White House press secretary's enthusiastic description of the new immigration detention center was slammed as "sickening" and "deplorable."
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt horrified critics with her enthusiastic description of the Trump administration’s new immigration detention center in Florida’s Everglades, which she confirmed is being informally known as “Alligator Alcatraz.”
Leavitt, during a press briefing on Monday, excitedly invited journalists to Tuesday’s official opening of the center at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport. The event will be attended by President Donald Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, she said.
“We hope to see many of you there,” Leavitt told reporters, before breathlessly describing what will await people who are sent to the facility:
“There is only one road leading in, and the only way out is a one-way flight. It is isolated and surrounded by dangerous wildlife and unforgiving terrain. The facility will have up to 5,000 beds to house, process and deport criminal illegal aliens.”
“This is an efficient and low-cost way to help carry out the largest mass deportation campaign in American history,” Leavitt added.
