Justin Langer has been painted as a monster, says Adam Gilchrist slamming Cricket Australia

Former Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist criticised Cricket Australia for the way it handled the exit of Justin Langer as the head coach. Langer said after quitting that he learnt a few players and the board were not in support of his contract extension.

Former Australia wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist has slammed Cricket Australia (CA) for their treatment of Justin Langer, who quit as the head coach of the senior national team earlier this month.

Justin Langer, in his retirement letter, had said he decided to quit the role, citing lack of support from the players, a few members of the support from the board. Notably, CA and Langer had a meeting last week and the former opener confirmed that he was offered a short-term contract extension.

Australian media reported that Langer was not happy when he was asked to re-apply for the post of the head coach despite winning the Ashes and the T20 World Cup.

There have been reports of player discontent over his coaching style and it came to light after Australia lost a home Test series to India last year. Langer had said he was aware of leaks to the media from the dressing room but carried on with his job and led Australia to their first-ever T20 World Cup title.

"He's been painted by some particular people as a monster, that is not Justin Langer," Gilchrist told Australian SEN Radio.

"He'll be the first to admit he has his frailties, he has his areas of weakness, but he'll sit and look you in the eye and work it out with you.

"So, to be painted as a monster, what sort of effect would that have on you personally and what's the flow-on effect to your family ... particularly through a period of time when you're not nearly understanding what is going on, the consistent innuendo and rumour."
