IPL 2022: CSK join MI as traditional powerhouses crash out of playoffs race

IPL 2022, CSK vs MI: Mumbai Indians handed Chennai Super Kings the knock out punch after bowling them out for 97 on Thursday. It's only the 2nd time that neither of CSK or MI have made the playoffs in a season.

Chennai Super Kings joined Mumbai Indians as the second time to exit the IPL 2022 playoffs race after the 5-time champions hammered the defending champions by 5 wickets in Match 59 of the season at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Mumbai Indians had officially become the first team to exit the playoffs race last week even a Chennai Super Kings stayed alive, albeit by the barest of margins hoping for a few other results to go their way. CSK had an outside chance to qualify with 14 points but the 4-time champions lost their 8th match of the season, having managed just 8 points in 12 matches so far.

This is only the second time both Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians have failed to qualify for the playoffs in an IPL season. 2016 was the first time when neither of the sides was in the playoffs. MI had finished 5th in that season when CSK were serving a two-year suspension.

Notably, this was also only the 2nd time in their history of the IPL that Chennai have failed to make the top 4 at the end of the group stages. CSK finished 7th with 6 wins in IPL 2020 where the Men in Yellow had a season to forget in the uAE.
