India vs West Indies: Rohit Sharma, who will lead India in ODIs as full-time captain for the first time, is approaching a couple of major milestones. He will be looking to overtake his former captain Virat Kohli on an elite list of Indian batters.
It’s a contest between a bigger contest as Rohit Sharma is eyeing major landmarks when India face West Indies in a 3-match ODI series, starting Sunday, February 6 in Ahmedabad. The newly-appointed full-time limited-overs captain will be in charge of the team when they play the historic 1000th ODI on Sunday, as the Asian giants will become the first team in international cricket to do so.
All eyes are on captain Rohit Sharma as he returns from a hamstring injury that kept him out of the tour of South Africa. He will lead India in ODIs for the first time as full-time captain, a month after Virat Kohli was sacked from the role.
Rohit had another productive season in 2021 and the skipper will be looking to lead from the front with the bat and India are looking to put behind the 0-3 loss in South Africa.
While there is no extra motivation needed for new captain Rohit Sharma, he is chasing a couple of landmarks. In fact, it’s a duel between Rohit and his former skipper Kohli for a batting record in ODIs against the West Indies in home matches.
Virat Kohli currently holds the record for the most runs scored by an Indian batter against the West Indies in ODI cricket at home with 1239 runs, including 5 hundred, in 20 matches. However, Rohit is not far behind as he has 1040 runs, including 3 hundred, in 16 matches.
Both Rohit and Kohli average in excess of 72 (Kohli - 72.88 and Rohit 80) against the West Indies and both the batters would be looking to continue their golden run against Kieron Pollard-led visiting side.
