India vs Sri Lanka: Rohit Sharma scripts another record, becomes most-capped player in T20I cricket

India vs Sri Lanka: Rohit Sharma walked out for the toss in his 125th T20I match as he broke Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik for the most-capped player in T20I cricket. The India captain is the only man from the country to have played more than 100 T20is.

Rohit Sharma has set another all-time record as the India captain has become the most-capped player in T20I cricket. Rohit achieved the feat when he walked out for the toss, leading India in the 3rd and final T20I of a 3-match series against Sri Lanka in Dharamsala on Sunday.

Rohit Sharma overtook Pakistan veteran Shoaib Malik on the elite list by playing his 125th T20i on Sunday. Rohit is the only Indian who has played more than 100 T20Is. MS Dhoni, who retired in 2020, is second on the Indian list with 98 T20is with Virat Kohli a close 3rd with 97 T20Is. Kohli was rested for the ongoing series against Sri Lanka and the final T20I against the West Indies earlier this month.

Rohit Sharma made his T20I debut at the T20 World Cup in 2007 and made an instant impact playing a key role in India's winning campaign under MS Dhoni. Rohit has scored 3308 runs, including 5 hundreds at an average of over 32 in the shortest format of the game.

"Without a doubt, one of the greatest white-ball players. Look at his performance as a batter and as a captain. Look at the way, he has changed the fortunes of whichever team he has played for. He will definitely go down as one of the greatest white-ball players. In the last World Cup, he hit 5 hundreds. He will go down as one of the greatest white-ball players ever," Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports, heaping praise on Rohit on his historic milestone on Sunday.

Only last week, Rohit became the leading run-getter in T20I cricket, going past New Zealand star Martin Guptill's tally of 3299 runs.

On Saturday, Rohit achieved a new record, becoming the most successful captain in T20I cricket in home matches.

Rohit has now led India to 16 wins in 17 matches at home venues in the T20I, placing him above England captain Eoin Morgan and New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson. Among Indian captains, Rohit has registered three more victories than Virat Kohli and five more than MS Dhoni, at home.
