India hopes for swift conclusion of Free Trade Agreement talks with EU: PM Modi
India Today
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India hopes for a swift conclusion of talks on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in Denmark on the second leg of his three-nation Europe trip, said India is hopeful of a swift conclusion of talks on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.
"We hope that negotiations on India-EU Free Trade Agreement will conclude soon," PM Modi said while addressing a joint press meet with Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
The statement comes as India and the European Union are set to hold an initial round of negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement in June with the aim of concluding an FTA by late 2023 or early 2024.
India had initiated negotiations for an FTA with the EU in 2007, but the talks stalled in 2013 as both sides failed to reach an agreement. The talks then resumed last year. The EU is one of the largest investors in India, accounting for 16 per cent of total investments received between 2015-20 (Euro 83 billion in 2000-2021).
On Tuesday, PM Modi and Danish PM Mette Frederiksen also held delegation-level talks to review progress in Green Strategic Partnership between both nations.
PM Modi said, "Today we discussed many regional and global issues including India-EU relations, Indo-Pacific and Ukraine.
"More than 200 Danish companies are working in different sectors in India. These companies are benefiting from increased ease of doing business and economic reforms in India. There are many investment opportunities for Danish companies and Danish Pension Funds in India's infrastructure sector and green industries," he added.
