Independent legislator Nehru alias Kuppusamy was on Tuesday (March 25, 2025) evicted from the Puducherry Assembly following an argument with Speaker R. Selvam.
After Chief Minister N. Rangasamy announced the constitution of Legislative Committees, Mr. Nehru sought a clarification from the Speaker about the heads of each of the Assembly Committees.
In his reply, the Speaker said all those who were heading the House panels will continue to chair the committees. Dissatisfied with the reply, Mr. Nehru said the Speaker should spell out the names of the chairpersons of the House committees.
When Speaker reiterated his stance, an argument ensued between him and Mr. Nehru. After a few minutes of noisy scenes, the Speaker directed the marshals to remove the legislator from the House. The MLA was later allowed to attend the session after the Chief Minister made a request to the Speaker.
Mr. Nehru, who was appointed as Chairman of Committee of Government Assurances after the 15th Assembly was constituted, was removed from the role in October last year. A communication was issued by the Assembly Secretariat after Mr. Nehru’s removal, appointing AINRC legislator R. Baskar Datchanamourtty.
