dpaManilaHundreds of protesters on Tuesday demonstrated in front of the offices of the Philippinesâ elections body to reject an unofficial tally showing that the son of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos could be the countryâs next president. The protesters denounced irregularities in the way Mondayâs vote was conducted, after thousands of people were unable to cast their ballots due to faulty vote-counting machines. In some precincts, voters stayed overnight to wait for repairs or replacements. The Commission on Elections stressed that the number of affected machines was insignificant and that it was prepared to face official complaints in the proper forum.âWe respect the right of the public to air their sentiments,â said Rex Laudiangco, the commissionâs spokesman. âIf they have proof, there are laws they can use in this process.â The protesters who included human rights activists, students and workers, carried placards reading âStop the brazen cheating!â and âFight against electoral fraud.â Anti-riot police officers dispersed the protesters, who condemned former senator Ferdinand âBongbongâ Marcos Jr and his vice presidential running mate Sara Duterte-Carpio, who are both leading the partial and unofficial tally of votes.âThe two represent the worst brand of traditional politics and governance in our nationâs history,â said human rights group Karapatan.
