Luxembourg: Investigators from the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) have been working on a record number of active fraud cases with an estimated total loss of over €67 billion ($80 billion) by the end of 2025.
This is almost three times as much as at the end of 2024, the authority announced in Luxembourg on Monday. It believes the figures will continue to rise in the coming years. The majority of the damage overall was due to customs and value-added tax (VAT) fraud.
The EPPO is responsible for prosecuting offences against the EU’s financial interests and began its work in June 2021. Currently 24 EU countries are parties to the treaty that established the office. Chief Prosecutor Laura Kövesi said she was satisfied with the achievements.
