Highbury Ave. remains closed in north London as crews repair water main break

A section of a main north-south artery in London's east-end will likely be closed until Wednesday as the city works to repair a broken water main that resulted in the road collapsing.
The water line on Highbury Avenue, between Kilally Road and Fuller Street, broke on Saturday.
One car got stuck and had to be towed out of a large puddle. A second vehicle was also damaged when the asphalt gave way, but there were no injuries.
Water was temporarily shut off in the immediate area on Saturday, affecting about 75 customers, including a long-term care home, the city's director of water Ashley Rammeloo said, but it was back on by the evening.
Crews have been on site working to repair the road all weekend, Rammeloo, said. The city expects the road to be paved on Tuesday and reopened on Wednesday, she said.
The exact cause of the water main break is not known, but Rammeloo expects a combination of the cold weather and the age of the pipes is to blame.
The water main under that stretch of Highbury was made of cast iron and was installed in 1949, she explained.
"Cast iron water main has been a focus of our renewal programs because of its tendency to fail," she said.
Cold temperatures also make it more likely for water mains to break, and this winter has been colder than recent years, Rammeloo said.
There were 62 breaks across the city in 2024, which generally saw warmer temperatures, she said, but there have been significantly more in past years simply due to colder weather.
