Rihanna Ruben has been thinking about her Halloween costume for the past year.
The 16-year-old from Paulatuk, N.W.T., dressed up as the corpse bride from Tim Burton’s movie of the same name for Angik School’s costume parade on Thursday.
"I got this dress in the thrift store in Yellowknife. It was a wedding dress,” she said. “I had some flowers that I bent, turned, and made into a little crown. And I had some Halloween makeup handy. I just didn't have blue, so I couldn't nail the exact colours for it."
All that hard work paid off; Ruben ended up taking home an award for most creative costume in her grade category.
“It feels good 'cause I put a lot of effort into this costume,” she said, laughing.
About 60 kids crowded into the gym at Angik School on Thursday afternoon to show off their outfits. Dozens of parents came to watch too.
Lexi Joy Ruben, just 18 months old, was dressed up as Princess Elsa from Frozen. Her twin sister, Jolee Claire, was dressed up as Anna. Elijah Green came in a hotdog outfit.
Cole Lennie leaned on his mother’s creativity for his costume. Mabel Thrasher put together a costume for him from the online game Roblox.
The 10-year-old said he likes dressing up because it means getting candy. Twix chocolate bars and Skittles are what he’s hoping to get the most of when he goes knocking on doors Friday night.
When it comes to trick-or-treating in a small Arctic community, Ruben said it’s cold, but it also has its perks.
“You get like a whole bag full if you go around the whole town. And I'd say it's max two hours to get around town.”
