Hebbal flyover ramp in North Bengaluru delayed until August 15, causing ongoing traffic congestion for commuters.
There is no relief for commuters in North Bengaluru as the additional ramp on the loop of Hebbal flyover, which connects traffic coming from K. R. Puram side to Ballari Road, will not be opened until August 15.
The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), which is conducting the work on the flyover, has missed another deadline for the opening of the flyover. Earlier this year, the Authority had said that the loop would be functional by the second week of May. According to the officials of Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP), the flyover ramp was supposed to be ready by November 2024, and the deadline was then pushed to January, then May-June and now again, to August.
BDA officials said that while the erection of all the girders has been completed, the concretisation work is now underway.
“We have completed girder erection and are now laying slabs and concretising it. The concrete would need over 20 days for curing. After that, we must do the asphalting, including matchstick asphalting, and then put up signages and only then open it to traffic. We are hoping to complete the work by August 10 itself. But even if that does not happen, we will definitely open it on August 15,” said a senior engineer of the BDA.
With the Hebbal flyover perpetually burdened with an increasing load of vehicles, commuters complain of getting caught in the congestion in the locality irrespective of timings. While peak hour traffic snarls are common, in Hebbal, commuters get stuck even during off-peak hours in the afternoon.
“It took me around 15 minutes to go from Kodigehalli to Hebbal. But vehicles had just stopped moving near the loop which connects to the flyover at around 3 p.m. It was very confusing as I was not expecting traffic at that time. I was tired waiting for the vehicles to move. I checked with my fellow commuters, and they also did not know why traffic was stuck,” said Amrutha Varshini, a private employee from Malleshwaram.
Traffic police officials said that Hebbal’s traffic woes are usually spoken about more than other hotspots in the city due to airport travellers who take the flyover, as well as active internet users.
