Heavy snow squalls cap off frigid weekend in London with 20 to 40 cm possible

Heavy snowfall is set to continue in the London region through Sunday, with some areas expected to receive upwards of 40 centimetres in total by the time the system moves out.
A yellow snow squall warning remained in place Sunday morning from Environment Canada, covering London, western Middlesex County, and Huron County, as a band of intense lake effect snow off Lake Huron brought whiteout conditions to local roads.
Total snowfall accumulations of 20 to 40 cm were likely with the system, and higher amounts may occur in some localized areas, the advisory said. London itself is expecting between 15 and 25 cm in the afternoon, with another 2 to 4 cm in the evening, according to the local forecast.
"The heaviest stuff is west of London, and throughout the day, that snow squall band is going to continue to move southwest, and maybe as it weakens, it's going to pull more towards the shore," said Nadia Jagdeo, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.
Special weather statements were also in place for Elgin County and for southern Perth county.
"At this time of year, the lakes are wide open ... the warmish water from the lake, combined with the cold air (are) really good ingredients for snow generation." Data from the Great Lakes Coastal Forecast System shows Lake Huron surface temperatures are around 6 to 8 C.
Peak snowfall rates of 2 to 5 cm were expected with the snow squall band, and some parts of London were already seeing up to 2 cm per hour by mid-morning.
The advisory warned that travel would likely be hazardous with accumulating snow and poor visibility. Around 10 a.m., the agency said visibility at London's airport had fallen to 0.6 kilometres.
"If (you're) going out, just be prepared for hazardous driving conditions on the roadways, and if you are going out, just have an emergency kit on hand," said Jagdeo.
Motorists are being asked to avoid Highbury Avenue north of Huron Street in the city's northeast end, after a watermain break on Saturday caused damage to the roadway.
The closure is between Fuller Street and Kilally Road, and is expected to last until Tuesday for emergency repairs.
