Former Australian captain Greg Chappell has called for an end to David Warner's leadership ban, saying that the southpaw could have captained the side well.

Former Australian captain Greg Chappell has called for an end to David Warner's leadership ban, saying that the left-handed batter would have captained the national team well.

Warner was one of the central figures in the sandpaper-gate scandal in 2018. The left-handed batter, who was vice-captain at the time, was involved with Steve Smith and Cameron Bankcroft in the ball-tampering incident. Warner and Smith were handed bans from international cricket for a year.

In terms of the leadership bans, the left-handed opener received a lifetime ban while Smith was given a time period of one year.

Cricket Australia's chief executive Nick Hockley recently said that while Warner is an outstanding leader on the field, currently there are no plans to overturn the decision.

Chappell also said the opener had served his punishment and if he was provided with the opportunity to lead again, would do a fine job. The Australian captain concluded by saying that Warner had paid his dues and it was time to open up leadership roles for him again.

"He obviously had a central role in what happened but he was not the only one that was involved and I don't know why he should be treated any differently,"
