Gjoa Haven, Nunavut, under boil water advisory after major leak detected
CBC
The hamlet of Gjoa Haven, Nunavut, says it is at risk of losing its water treatment system.
The hamlet posted a notice on social media on Jan. 15 saying a leak was detected in the water line between the lake and treatment plant. That prompted a boil water advisory a day later.
The hamlet said there is limited capacity to deliver potable water. It has one water truck that now has to drive directly to the lake pumphouse to fill up and deliver water to residents.
It said water would only be delivered "as needed."
In an update on Tuesday, the hamlet called it an emergency, saying it was "at risk of losing our water treatment system until we find and repair the water main that is leaking."
The hamlet said it's working with the Nunavut government to fly in help and parts for the repairs.
Residents are asked to reduce all non-essential water use such as laundry or long showers.
Meanwhile, Nunavut's health department is advising residents to boil all water for consumption, including drinking, preparing food, and brushing teeth.
