Giants’ offseason makeover is getting thrown directly into the fire

Take out your yardstick and get ready to measure improvement.
The Giants could’ve been scheduled to open the season Sunday against any of 14 different opponents, but the NFL set up a date with the Commanders, who stunningly finished one win shy of the Super Bowl last season.
“We wouldn’t want it any other way,” cornerback Dru Phillips said after Monday’s practice. “Especially after the year they had last year and we’re coming in with a new team, so you’re going to find out real fast. We’re excited. We wouldn’t want any other competition, especially a division rival.”
Even in the darkest times of the past decade, it used to be that the Giants could pencil in at least a split with the Commanders.

Suddenly, someone had hit a rewind button and everyone had been transported back seven months. It was early spring instead of late fall, it was broiling hot outside the arena walls and not freezing cold. Everyone was back at TD Garden. There were 19,156 frenzied fans on their feet begging for blood, poised for the kill.
