Freezing rain changing to heavy rainfall Sunday prompts 2 weather alerts for Waterloo region

Waterloo region and Guelph are under two yellow weather alerts warning of freezing rain changing to heavy rainfall Sunday, Environment Canada says.
Freezing rain is expected to begin midday Sunday, with as much as five to 15 millimetres of ice accretion. Later in the afternoon temperatures will rise and heavy rainfall is expected. The forecast could bring 20 to 40 millimetres of rain and freezing rain by Monday morning.
"The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall," warned Environment Canada in a statement on Saturday evening.
"Localized flooding is possible. Some roads may become impassable. Avoid low-lying areas. Stay away from rivers, creeks and culverts."
The freezing rain could cause power outages and property or tree damage due to the weight of the ice on trees, the agency said.
The alerts come just two days after a Boxing Day storm brought a messy mix of snow, ice pellets and freezing rain to the region on Friday.
