'Franklin' Publisher Condemns Hegseth Meme Featuring Beloved Turtle

Kids Can Press checked the defense secretary without ever dropping his name.
The Canadian-owned publisher of Paulette Bourgeois’ “Franklin the Turtle” children’s book series condemned Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s “unauthorized” use of the fictional reptile to make light of the Trump administration’s boat strike scandal.
Hegseth has faced backlash in recent days after he reportedly gave the directive to “kill everybody” ahead of a Sept. 2 U.S. military strike on an alleged drug smuggling boat. According to The Washington Post, two men survived the first attack. At that point, U.S. Navy Admiral Frank Bradley followed Hegseth’s command to leave no survivors and ordered a second strike.
Lawmakers have warned that such an act could be considered a war crime.
On Sunday, Hegseth’s attempt to create a meme out of the scandal backfired when he shared what appeared to be an AI-generated cover of a book titled “Franklin Targets Narco Terrorists” on social media. The cover showed the fictional turtle riding a helicopter and apparently firing missiles at drug boats.
“For your Christmas wish list,” Hegseth wrote alongside the image.
