The criminal case against the chief of Carry the Kettle Nakoda Nation, Scott Eashappie, is set for a pre-trial hearing in Regina Court of King’s Bench on March 20.
Eashappie was charged last year with fraud over $5,000, theft, money laundering and breach of trust.
A two-day preliminary hearing determining whether the case could proceed to trial was held in Indian Head provincial court in December and continued in Regina provincial court on Monday.
All arguments and evidence heard during the preliminary hearing are covered by a standard publication ban.
Shortly after the charges were laid, Eashappie told CBC they are a “political smoke show."
He and several other members of Carry the Kettle Nakoda Nation, located 95 kilometres east of Regina, attended court in person on Monday.

Sarnia City Council will hold a special meeting Tuesday morning to respond to social media comments made by Coun. Bill Dennis, who criticized city spending on a new mural by Indigenous artist Kennady Osborne as “virtue signalling by woke politicians” — then made a series of comments in response to a reply from Aamjiwnaang Chief Janelle Nahmabin that some have characterized as unprofessional and aggressive.
