England’s World Cup winning captain, someone who is well regarded for changing the culture of white-ball cricket in the country, Eoin Morgan decided to call time on his career.
England captain Eoin Morgan decided to hang up his boots on Tuesday, 29 June. The World Cup-winning captain, who also led the team to the final of 2016 T20 World Cup in India stated that it was time for him to move on.
Morgan, who has been woefully out of touch for close to two years now said that he chose not to extend his international career till the T20 World Cup, because it would have been everything against what he had stood for.
“It goes against everything I stand for, I just would have felt like an imposter,” he said, when asked about an England farewell appearance.
Morgan’s retirement news was met with love and respect across English cricketing circles, who have held him in high regard since the 2015 debacle in the ODI World Cup in Australia.
Morgan was at the heart of a modern approach, which was considered to be data heavy, something very different from the ideas of English cricket at the time.
“I’m very happy with my decision. The day it hit me I was emotional, it was a difficult day, but since then I’ve been very content. I’d reached the end of the road.
“The World Cup is in October and the feeling that day, it felt a million miles away.”Eoin Morgan will now join Sky’s commentary team and going forward wants to work in an administrative position in English cricket.
