India put on 338 runs for the loss of seven wickets at the end of day one at Edgbaston in the fifth Test match of the series, which began in 2021.
India were rescued by a breath-taking 222-run partnership from Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja on day one of the fifth Test match against England at Edgbaston.
A packed Friday crowd at Birmingham were delighted by veteran James Anderson’s bowling in the early hours of the day, as the hosts managed to reduce the Indian batting order to 98/5 at the end of the 28th over. However, that did not last long as Pant danced down the track and started attacking the pacers, alongside Ravindra Jadeja who played second fiddle throughout the day.
Pant’s belligerence took over after reaching his half century as he started taking on Jack Leach and started depositing out of the park.
The duo added a mammoth 222 runs for the sixth wicket, which was the highest partnership by an Indian team in England for the sixth wicket. This was also India’s joint fourth-highest partnership in Test cricket.
The highest partnership record remains with Dilip Vengsarkar and former Indian coach Ravi Shastri for 298* runs against Australia at Wankhede.
The partnership came to an end after Pant was dismissed by former captain Joe Root just shy of 150 runs. At the time of leaving the pitch, Pant had scored 146 runs off just 111 balls.
The knock completely changed the complexion of the game as India went onto dominate the larger part of the second and third session. After Pant’s wicket, England were able to dismiss Shardul Thakur as well, giving them some sense of control at the end of the day’s play.
