England vs India: Ravi Shastri on Stuart Broad conceding 35 runs while bowling to Jasprit Bumrah – What I saw was bizarre

ENG vs IND, 5th Test, Day 2: Stuart Broad, on Saturday, bowled the most expensive over in the history of Test cricket, breaking a 19-year-old record.

Former cricketer Ravi Shastri was surprised after Stuart Broad conceded 35 runs in an over on Day two of India’s rescheduled fifth Test against England at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. Broad looked hapless while bowling to Jasprit Bumrah, who took the fast bowler to the cleaners.

The fact that the wide and no-ball in the over went for boundaries didn’t help Broad by any stretch of the imagination. The 36-year-old Broad currently holds the dubious record of bowling the most expensive over in the history of Test cricket.

Earlier, the record was held by South African spinner Robin Peterson, who gave away 28 runs against West Indies’ Brian Lara at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. Shastri expressed surprise at what panned out in the second day’s play.

“Don’t tell me I was again on the mic when 35 runs were scored. I thought I had seen it all, but not really. 36 from Yuvraj (Singh), 36 I had hit myself and today what I saw was bizarre. It’s something you would have never imagined. A world record from Jasprit Bumrah, batting at No. 10, as captain of India for the first time,” Shastri was quoted as saying.

“You feel you’ve seen everything. But you must realize you are still a student in the game. Something will surprise you on another day. What I saw today was something absolutely bizarre. Jasprit Bumrah breaking the world record - getting 29 off his bat in a 35-run over,” he added.

Bumrah went on to score an unbeaten 16-ball 31, helping India score 416 runs in the first innings. Bumrah also picked up two wickets before rain stopped play for a while.
