England vs India: Brian Lara congratulates Jasprit Bumrah on breaking his 19-year-old record in Birmingham Test

Wimbledon 2022: Stuart Broad conceded 35 runs in one of his overs on Day 2 of the ongoing fifth Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

Legendary West Indies cricketer Brian Lara has congratulated Jasprit Bumrah after the Indian batter was involved in the most expensive over in the history of Test cricket. Back in December 2003, the left-handed Lara smashed 28 runs off left-arm spinner Robin Peterson in a Test match against South Africa at the iconic Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

The record stayed with Lara for nearly 19 years. On Saturday, July 2, Stuart Broad conceded 35 runs with Bumrah on strike in the fifth Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The over started with Broad leaking 10 runs off wides and no-balls. In the first five balls of the over, Bumrah collected 34 runs, after which the latter finished off with a single.

After his record was broken, Lara posted a congratulatory tweet for Bumrah, who is currently leading the Indian Test team in the absence of Rohit Sharma.

Lara took to Twitter and wrote, “Join me in congratulating the young @Jaspritbumrah93 on breaking the record of Most Runs in a Single Over in Tests. Well done!.”

Bumrah smashed 31 runs off 16 balls and stayed unbeaten, helping India post 416 after being reduced to 98 for five in less than 30 overs. After Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja scored centuries for the visiting team, it was Bumrah’s knock that injected momentum into India’s innings.
