Muslims all over the world celebrate Eid ul-Fitr with the first sighting of the crescent moon after a month of fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. Eid is celebrated on the first day of the Shawwal month.
This year, the new crescent moon was sighted and confirmed by religious authorities in India on May 3. Eid is observed on different days around the world depending on the sighting of the new moon.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind extended their best wishes to the people on Eid-ul-Fitr on Monday night.
The PM, who is on a 3-nation visit to Europe, took to Twitter to wish fellow citizens on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr. "Best wishes on Eid-ul-Fitr. May this auspicious occasion enhance the spirit of togetherness and brotherhood in our society. May everyone be blessed with good health and prosperity," he tweeted.
