East Coast Road residents in Chennai on continuous strike, block road against eviction

25,000 residents of Injambakkam on Chennai’s East Coast Road (ECR) have been on a continuous strike against the eviction by govt officials who are acting under court orders to clear waterbody encroachments.

Nearly 25,000 residents at Bethel Nagar in Chennai’s Injambakkam have been on a continuous strike against the eviction by state government officials who were acting as per court’s order to clear waterbody encroachments.

Residents also blocked roads on Thursday, January 27, as officials began to demolish compound walls surrounding the empty land and cut off power to commercial properties.

Authorities had to act swiftly after Madras High Court issued a warning that they would face punishment for wilful disobedience.

Nearly 25,000 residents of Bethel Nagar, of which many have been staying in the area for nearly two decades, questioned the authorities on how they had allowed the residents into the properties earlier and that they provided power supply.

Residents asked, if the government has allowed this for two decades, why are you asking us to leave now?
