Volunteer firefighters are working to rescue residents from the upper floors of a highrise building on Lisgar Avenue in Tillsonburg, Ont., that's engulfed in flames.
Ed Sanchuk, acting sergeant of West Region Ontario Provincial Police, said there were no reports of any significant injuries, and warming centres would be set up nearby for displaced residents.
Police said a woman who was taking a walk in the area on Tuesday morning noticed the fire and informed officials immediately.
"Just shortly before 7 this morning, a Good Samaritan was walking her dog in a park located nearby and noticed the fire on the foiurth-storey balcony, and immediately contacted 911," Sanchuk said.
"We have several different fire departments on scene," he added. "They've used their ladder to rescue several individuals from the forth and fifth storey of this building."
Police have closed the roads in the area and are asking people to make space for emergency crews, especially when volunteer firefighters are displaying a green light.
"As we come into the scene, we're just asking everyone to please move over for emergency vehicles, every second counts, especially when we have a fully engulfed apartment fire," he said.
Oxford County OPP will continue to provide more information throughout the day as it becomes available.
