Dwayne Johnson Recalls ‘Oh, S**t’ Moment He Announced Bin Laden’s Death Before Obama

The wrestler-turned-actor famously stole then-President Barack Obama's thunder by teasing the 2011 announcement on social media ahead of time.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson recently joined the “Awards Chatter” podcast to discuss his acting career, but was also asked about the time he accidentally revealed the death of Osama bin Laden — before then-President Barack Obama could announce it himself.
Obama announced the U.S. operation that killed the mastermind behind 9/11 during a televised late-night address on May 1, 2011, from the East Room of the White House. Johnson happened to learn about the news beforehand, however, and couldn’t keep quiet.
“Here’s the thing,” Johnson said on the podcast, which was recorded live at Chapman University and moderated by The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg. “I got a call, and the call was like, ‘Hey, this thing happened.’ And I said, ‘OK, wonderful news.’”
He continued, “And I was told on the call, the president at that time, he’s going to make his speech in 20 minutes or whatever it was. So I said, ‘OK great.’ So 20 minutes goes by, and about the 25th minute, I tweet this.”
The post had teased, “Just got word that will shock the world - Land of the free…home of the brave DAMN PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!” While it didn’t directly confirm the news, it served as confirmation of rabid speculation at the time surrounding Obama’s address.
