Kohli's struggles in international cricket have been well-documented as the Indian batter failed to make an impact during the recently-concluded tour of England. The former Indian captain was then left out of the squads for the ODI and T20I series in West Indies.
Many former cricketers have questioned the decision to rest Kohli for the tour, with Vengsarkar being the latest one. Speaking to Khaleej Times, the former selector said that he can't understand why the former Indian captain has been rested.
Vengsarkar went on to say that if Kohli is in the scheme of things for the T20 World Cup, then he should be playing as many games as possible to get his confidence back.
“I don’t understand why the Indian selectors have rested him for the West Indies series. If he is in their scheme of things for the T20 World Cup in Australia, he should play as many games as possible to get his form and confidence back. That would help him," said Vengsarkar.
The former cricketer further stated that resting Kohli sends a wrong signal as he will be heading to Australia without any big scores behind him. Vengsarkar also said that the game is all about confidence and it's important to play as many matches as possible.
“Resting him sends a wrong signal because if he is going to Australia, then he will go without really big scores behind him. That would worry him as well. I always feel that when you are not scoring runs, it’s important to play as many matches as possible and spend time in the middle, and get back among the runs. This game is all about confidence," said Vengsarkar.
