A court in Delhi has asked for CCTV footage after former JNU student Sharjeel Imam alleged that he was assaulted inside the Tihar jail.
A Delhi court on Thursday asked for CCTV footage after former JNU student Sharjeel Imam alleged assault and harassment inside Tihar jail. Sharjeel Imam, an accused in the North-east Delhi riots case, is lodged in jail. The next hearing of the court is scheduled on July 20 and the karkardooma court has asked for CCTV footage of the cameras which are inside and outside Imam's cell.
The court has also asked the Jail Superintendent and register of inmates, who participated in the surprise search, to be present for the next hearing.
"Let the concerned jail superintendent be also present on the next date of hearing for assisting the court in disposal of the present application. Let the register of the inmates/sewadars, who participated in the said surprise search, as stated, may also be produced in the court on the next date. Let the CCTV footage of all the said three cameras for 30.06.2022 for the period 6.00 PM to 8.00 PM be also produced on the next date i.e. 20.07.2022," the court order stated.
The jail authorities have denied the allegation that other undertrial prisoners entered Sharjeel Imam's cell and assaulted him. They have also refuted allegations that the inspection was illegal.
An affidavit by the jail authorities said that the Assistant Superintendent of jail is authorised to use undertrial/convicted prisoners for management of prison discipline and inspections. Other prisoners who entered Imam's cell were part of the inspection team, the affidavit said.
In April, a Delhi court dismissed the bail plea filed by Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 North-east Delhi riots larger conspiracy case where he and several others have been accused under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
