Delays, closures across P.E.I. as winter storm rolls through the Maritimes
CBC
Islanders woke up to blowing snow, tricky driving conditions, and cancellations across the Island Monday as a winter storm rolled through the Maritimes.
“Kings County is going to take the worst of this over the next 12 hours,” CBC meteorologist Tina Simpkin said, adding that up to another 15 centimetres of snow is possible in that area.
“The further east you are across the Island the worse the weather is going to be.”
Winds are expected to pick up out of the northwest, with gusts up to 70 kilometres per hour – but in Kings County, those gusts could be near 90 kilometers per hour throughout the morning and into the afternoon, Simpkin said.
Snow is expected to taper off in Prince and Queens counties, although Simpkin said there is a possibility of a couple more centimeters of snow.
A yellow winter storm warning for eastern parts of the Island, issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada on Sunday, is still in effect.
Most public schools on Prince Edward Island are closed due to the weather.
The Public Schools Branch said the Westisle Family of Schools are operating on a delay, while all other PSB families of schools are cancelled due to road and weather conditions.
In the French-language school board, École Pierre-Chaisson in Tignish opened on a one-hour delay. All other schools in la Commission Scolaire de Langue Française were cancelled.
