CSK’s Simarjeet Singh recalls ‘disheartening’ incident: I got a call telling me that I am no longer a part of the team

Fast bowler Simarjeet Singh is currently plying his trade for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fast bowler Simarjeet Singh recalled an incident when he was unceremoniously left out of the India U19 team prior to an Asia Cup edition. The now 24-year-old was excited to play in the multi-nation tournament before he was told that he was excluded from the squad because he took part in the previous edition of the championship.

The Delhi-born pacer said that after the abrupt rejection, his parents encouraged and motivated him and the words of wisdom lifted his morale.

“There was this one time when I was selected to play for India in the Asia Cup at the Under-19 level. The team was about to depart for the Asia Cup. Just one day before our departure, I received a call telling me that I cannot go to the Asia Cup,” Singh was quoted as saying in a video, uploaded on CSK’s official Twitter handle.

“It’s because of some strange rule that barred those who played at the Under-19 level the previous year from playing again this year. Since I played at the Under-19 level the previous year, the selector cancelled my selection,” he stated.

“I was supposed to take a flight early the following morning and I got a call very late at night telling me that I was no longer a part of the team. This development really disheartened me but my parents tried to pacify me by telling me that I should be proud to have gotten where I have,” Singh added.

Singh has come a long way as he has played 11 first-class, 23 List A and as many T20s in his career after his debut in 2018. The speedster got a massive break after four-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) picked him up at his base price of INR 20 lakh for the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

After warming the bench for quite a bit, Singh made his IPL debut against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Pune. He went wicketless in his first two outings, after which he finished with 4-0-27-2 against the Delhi Capitals.
