CBC
A correctional officer was injured during a "disturbance" at Her Majesty's Penitentiary, the Department of Justice confirmed on Monday, despite initially telling CBC News there were no injuries during the Friday night incident.
In an emailed statement on Monday, department media relations manager Eric Humber said a correctional officer "received minor injuries" and confirmed that no inmates were injured.
Humber also said the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is investigating the situation, and prison officials are reviewing it.
Police and paramedics responded to the scene on Friday around 8:30 p.m. NT
At the time, multiple sources with knowledge of the incident described it as a "riot" to CBC News, and said it involved an altercation between an inmate and correctional officer.
The RNC declined a CBC News interview request, and deferred questions to the Department of Justice.
The Department of Justice told CBC News the situation was de-escalated successfully, but did result in the prison being locked down overnight.

Sarnia City Council will hold a special meeting Tuesday morning to respond to social media comments made by Coun. Bill Dennis, who criticized city spending on a new mural by Indigenous artist Kennady Osborne as “virtue signalling by woke politicians” — then made a series of comments in response to a reply from Aamjiwnaang Chief Janelle Nahmabin that some have characterized as unprofessional and aggressive.
