A head constable, Ali Mohd Ganie, was shot dead by suspected militants in Hassanpora in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district on Saturday.
He was posted at Kulgam police station. After the gunmen fired at him, he was rushed to the hospital. However, he died on the way.
The area has been cordoned off by security forces.
Only three weeks ago, two militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in the same region of south Kashmir.
Meanwhile, in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar, militants hurled a grenade at security personnel in the Maharaj Bazar area. There were no immediate reports of any casualty, the police said.
At about 4.30 pm, a grenade was lobbed at a team of CRPF and police personnel, a police official said. The area has been cordoned off and a hunt has been launched to nab the attackers, the official added.
