Complainant describes traumatic toll of losing virginity to Tony Humby

The pain was still fresh for the young man who testified in the trial of accused predator Tony Humby on Wednesday.
He appeared by video from a jail in the province — the third complainant so far who is presently incarcerated.
The young man fidgeted and squirmed in his seat as he spoke to Crown prosecutor Deidre Badcock, describing how Humby would get him drunk and high before making sexual advances.
“I don’t know what to think about myself anymore,” he said. “I don’t know if I’m gay or not gay, because that’s how I lost my virginity.”
The complainant said he was introduced to Humby through a friend shortly after he moved into a group home for troubled teens. He estimated he would have been in Grade 10 at the time.
His friend told him Humby’s trailer on Hussey Drive in St. John's was a place they could drink and smoke. On the first night he tagged along, the complainant said they drank beers in the kitchen and smoked marijuana out of a bong in the bathroom.
The complainant said he got too intoxicated, and went to lie down in Humby’s bed. He said Humby came in and offered him poppers — formally known as alkyl nitrite, a recreational drug that can be sniffed to produce a brief euphoric high. The drug causes muscles to relax, and is known to be used before anal sex.
“I sniffed it and then my head started throbbing,” the young man said. “I was loaded and stoned at the same time.”
The complainant said Humby then started performing oral sex on him, telling him it was just something friends did for each other. That escalated into anal sex, which the complainant described as painful.
“He made everything seem like everything was OK. But it really wasn’t.”
The complainant said Humby never asked for consent.
He said Humby gave him money afterwards, and assured him it was no big deal.
The young man said he didn’t have many friends at the time, and the friends he did have were also going to Humby’s trailer. He thought it was normal. “Now I know friends come and go, and certain people are not actually your friend.”
