an exhibition of art work by women
The gallery walls at Kasthuri Sreenivasan Cultural Centre were awash with fresh canvases of varying sizes. In view of International Women’s Day month, it hosted an exhibition by Kasthuri Sreenivasan Trust with Parvath, a Coonoor-based art gallery, bringing together the work of 29 women artists for an exhibition titled Her-Art. From oil-on-canvas to watercolour and acrylic, a wide gamut of art was displayed for visitors to the gallery.

The exhibition featured a total of 60 art works by 29 artists, curated by Shobha Premkumar, founder of Parvath. It was the tenth exhibition by Shobha, who launched Parvath out of a passion to support emerging artists, and the gallery’s first in Coimbatore. Work by art-school trained established artists shared space along with those of self-taught artists, many of whom were having their work displayed in a gallery for the first time.

“There are several artists who are full-time professionals in varied fields, and make art only during their leisure time; we chose the best among these artists and sought to display their work, which would otherwise remain unnoticed. Also, featuring them alongside that of seasoned artists would also give their work larger visibility,” said Shobha.
One saw the work of city-based homemaker and artist Sandya Balakrishnan alongside that of Wilma Jayakumar, who heads the Art and Design Department at Hebron School in Udhagamandalam, and of Nitya Sarkar, an alumnus of the prestigious JJ School of Art in Mumbai.
