Coimbatore Corporation secures ₹54 crore for Sathyamangalam Road widening project, aiming to ease congestion and enhance commuter safety.
Coimbatore Corporation has received ₹54 crore through Local Planning Authority (LPA) fund to acquire private lands and compensate landowners as part of the Sathyamangalam Road widening project. The project spans from Textool Bridge to Old Sathy Road in Ganapathy, in the North Zone of the Corporation.
Sathyamangalam Road (National Highway 948), which connects Coimbatore with Bengaluru, is one of the busiest roads in the region. Due to heavy traffic, accessing the road has become challenging, with some stretches being particularly narrow. This has made the need for widening of the road to ease congestion and enhance commuter safety.
A resolution (No. 619) passed by the Corporation Council on October 12, 2020, led to the initial allocation of ₹38.64 crore through a Government Order (GO No. 32) issued on February 11, 2023. An additional ₹15.35 crore has now been sanctioned, bringing the total allocation to ₹54 crore.
The Corporation had originally prepared a land plan schedule for acquiring 20 meters on either side of the road. However, the announcement of the Coimbatore metro rail project by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) recently has prompted a revision to accommodate a width of 24 meters.
A senior Corporation official explained, “The additional four meters is yet to be finalised. A combined field study will soon be conducted by the Corporation, CMRL, and National Highways Department to determine the additional space required. Based on this, a revised land plan schedule will be prepared. The revised schedule is expected to be ready within two months, after which the land acquisition process will begin and be handed over to the National Highways Department, paving the way for the Sathyamangalam Road expansion project.”
