John Berman reminded Rep. Mike Lawler why the network was covering what he described as a "colossal waste of time."
CNN’s John Berman hit back at Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) on Monday after he tried to downplay right-wing calls to investigate the Justice Department’s handling of files tied to late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Berman asked about far-right commentator Laura Loomer’s suggestion that a special counsel be appointed to probe Donald Trump’s DOJ, which sparked MAGA infighting and outrage via a memo with the FBI that contradicts Attorney General Pam Bondi’s past claim that a rumored Epstein “client list” exists.
Lawler responded, “I’m not exactly one to subscribe to conspiracy theories so from my vantage point, if somebody committed a crime, if somebody affiliated with Jeffrey Epstein committed a crime, they should be prosecuted.”
“In the absence of that, frankly, this seems like a colossal waste of time and effort and, frankly, a lot of nonsense. There are a lot of issues facing this country right now, a dead pedophile ain’t one of them.”
The congressman, when asked to clarify what he meant by “nonsense,” turned to the network’s coverage of Epstein before reiterating his prior comments.
