Chief of staff fired by Quebec Liberal Marwah Rizqy threatens legal action
CBC
The Quebec Liberals' ex-chief of staff, Geneviève Hinse, has sent a formal legal notice to MNA Marwah Rizqy.
Earlier this week, Marwah Rizqy was suspended from caucus by party leader Pablo Rodriguez for her firing of Hinse.
Hinse is now threatening legal action against Rizqy unless the latter delivers a public apology within 24 hours for dismissing Hinse "without any grounds." The notice, obtained by Radio-Canada, is dated Nov. 19.
"You cavalierly claimed to have dismissed Ms. Hinse from her position as chief of staff, 'notably for serious misconduct and breach of trust,'" reads the notice.
In it, Hinse's lawyer, Jacques Jeansonne, states that Hinse's firing should have been reserved for the party leader and that Rizqy never explained the reason for it.
"Your silence aggravates the harm suffered by our client, as it raises questions in public opinion about the possibility that such motives could exist," wrote Jeansonne.
Rizqy had been serving as parliamentary leader since being appointed to the position by Rodriguez in June. He removed her from the role Tuesday after what the party described as a "breach of trust" in relation to Hinse's firing.
Radio-Canada sources say Hinse's dismissal — announced to other caucus members Monday evening — stems from a personality clash between her and Rizqy.
On Wednesday afternoon, Rodriguez told reporters he still didn't know Rizqy's reasons for dismissing Hinse.
Hinse has long collaborated with Rodriguez, serving as his chief of staff when he was the Quebec Lieutenant under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's federal government. She followed Rodriguez into Quebec politics after he left Ottawa.
