Chennai traffic police announce diversions, parking spots for New Year’s Eve

In light of the new year’s eve celebrations on Tuesday (December 31, 2024) and with huge crowds visiting the churches and beaches in the city, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) have announced a slew of traffic regulations, which will kick in at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and go on till 6 a.m. on Wednesday (January 1, 2025).
In light of the new year’s eve celebrations on Tuesday (December 31, 2024) and with huge crowds visiting the churches and beaches in the city, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) have announced a slew of traffic regulations, which will kick in at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and go on till 6 a.m. on Wednesday (January 1, 2025).
All flyovers in the city will be closed for traffic from 10 p.m. on Tuesday till 6 a.m. on Wednesday.
To regulate the crowds expected to visit the Marina Beach, the traffic police have closed some roads and restricted parking on these roads, including the Foreshore Service road, from War Memorial to Lighthouse. Vehicles coming from Adyar and intending to proceed towards Kamarajar Salai would be diverted at Greenways Road and South Canal Road Junction towards Mandaveli, R.A. Puram 2nd Main Road, R.K. Mutt Road, and Luz Mylapore to reach their destinations.
Similarly, vehicles coming from the Dr. R.K. Salai side and proceeding towards Kamarajar Salai will be diverted at V.M. Street Junction towards R.K. Mutt Road, Luz Junction, Mandaveli, and South Canal Bank Road to reach Santhome High Road and Greenways Road.
Vehicles coming from Parry’s and going towards Kamarajar Salai will be diverted at RBI subway (North) towards North Fort Wall Road, Muthusamy Road, Wallajah Point, and Anna Salai to reach their destinations. On Flag Staff Road, vehicles will not be allowed from Wallajah Point towards War Memorial from 8 p.m.
For those using public transport, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses proceeding north from Greenways Junction will be diverted at R.K. Mutt via Thiruvengadam Street, Devanathan Street, Venkateswara Agraharam Street, and Nageshwara Park to reach their destinations. And in the return direction, the MTC buses will be diverted at RBI subway to reach Wallajah Point through Muthusamy Point, Anna Salai, Cathedral Road, V.M. Street Junction, Luz Junction, and Mandaveli Junction to reach South Canal Road and proceed to their destinations.
The Traffic police have made parking arrangements on Kamarajar Salai at Swami Sivananda Salai (from Doordarshan Kendra towards Periyar statue), Wallajah Road (near Tamil Nadu state guest house towards Anna statue, Island Grounds, PWD ground (Secretariat opposite), Press Club Road, Kalaivanar Arangam, Victoria Hostel, Bharathi Salai (from Victoria Hotel Road to Bharathi Salai Junction), Lloyds Road, Queen Mary’s College campus, Lady Wellington School, NKT School, Dr. Besant Road, Bharath Scout campus, and South Canal Road.
