Every year during the months of northeast monsoon, Tamil Nadu experiences a sudden rain that floods roads, subways, airports throwing life out of gear. Chennai often gets heavy rainfall.

Rainfall that occurred on December 30 was unprecedented with regards to the regions affected. Areas such as Nungambakkam, Mambalam, T Nagar received over 100 mm of rainfall in a limited period.
