Chennai police arrest YouTuber Varaaki for failing to surrender to prison authorities as ordered by the Madras High Court.
The Chennai city police arrested YouTuber Varaaki, alias V.R. Krishnakumar, based on a complaint filed by prison authorities, as he failed to surrender before them on time as directed by the Madras High Court in a criminal case.
The police said that Varaaki was originally arrested and remanded to prison a few months ago for allegedly threatening and verbally abusing his landlady in an obscene way. She had asked him to vacate the rented house, which he was allegedly using for illegal activities such as fraudulent land registrations, intimidation, and extortion. Varaaki had previously been arrested for misconduct toward women. He was detained under the Goondas Act in this instance.
According to the orders of the Madras High Court, Varaaki had been released on three months’ interim bail. However, as he failed to surrender before the prison authorities on March 30, he has now been re-arrested and lodged in prison in accordance with the High Court’s directions.
The police said that a total of 15 criminal cases are currently under investigation against Varaaki, including charges related to fraudulent property registrations using forged documents, extortion, and the obscene harassment of women.
