Prior to the January 6 attack on the Capitol, officials from the U.S. Capitol Police failed to act on intelligence that suggested protesters coming to rally that day could be armed and planned to "target" Congress, according to a report by the department's inspector general obtained by CBS News.
The report, dated March 1, cites multiple "deficiencies" and the department's failure to disseminate intelligence from as early as December 30 that suggested protesters "may be inclined to become violent." Findings from the inspector general's report have not been previously published and some lawmakers have been pressing to make them public. "UCSP did not prepare a comprehensive, Department-wide plan for demonstrations planned for January 6, 2021," wrote Capitol Police Inspector General Michael Bolton. His review was the first federal audit of the January 6 attack.Authorities made two gruesome discoveries Tuesday after a Missouri woman walked into a police station and told officers that she fatally shot one of her children and drowned the other, officials said. Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak said at a news conference that authorities believe both children were killed Tuesday morning.
