Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has confirmed that Calgary Ward 9 Coun. Gian-Carlo Carra has been charged with mischief under $5,000 relating to an incident in Bridgeland on Apr. 2, 2022.
EPS took up the case in April 2022 following a request from the Calgary Police Service (CPS) for an impartial investigation because Carra served on the Calgary Police Commission.
In a statement sent to CBC News, EPS confirmed that the Calgary councillor has been charged.
The matter was assigned to a detective from the Investigative Response Section in Edmonton and a comprehensive investigation followed. The completed investigation was reviewed by the Legal Advisors Section of the EPS and then subsequently reviewed by the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service.
"On Dec. 9, 2022, Mr. Carra was criminally charged with mischief under $5,000 relating to the incident that occurred on April 2, 2022," said an EPS spokesperson in a statement.
As this matter is now before the courts, Edmonton police said they will not comment any further on the matter.
The charge relates to a reported road rage incident and that a vehicle had been damaged in Calgary's Bridgeland neighbourhood.
CBC News confirmed with CPS at the time that the instance involved the driver of a vehicle and a pedestrian, and that the pedestrian involved was Carra.
