Soldiers of the Border Security Force were attacked on the India-Bangladesh border by a group of nine smugglers with sharp weapons and sticks on Wednesday around 10:30 pm, officials said today.

A jawan opened fire with a non-lethal weapon to save himself and his partner, following which the attackers fled. However, the soldiers managed to return with one of the gang members despite being severely injured.
Jahangir Alam Mondal, arrested with 504 bottles of Phensedyl - a prescription drug, was also injured in the scuffle.
The injured jawans and the arrested smuggler were immediately administered first aid and then admitted to the government hospital in Bengal’s Krishnaganj.

The estimated value of the confiscated Phensedyl is Rs 1,03,476.
During interrogation, Jahangir Alam Mondal revealed that he and his other accomplices were about to smuggle Phensedyl when they were intercepted by the BSF. His accomplices attacked the BSF jawans to ensure his release, Mondal added.
