BJP threatens agitation if Udupi District Hospital construction remains unfinished by April, citing delays since 2021.
Seeking early completion of the 250-bed Udupi District Government Hospital building, the BJP threatened that it will launch an agitation if the government does not complete the new building by the end of April.
Addressing the press in Udupi on Tuesday (April 7), Kutyaru Naveen Shetty, BJP district unit president, said that the government upgraded it from a 124-bed to 250-bed hospital. Stating that the construction of the new building began in late 2021, Mr. Shetty noted that the government told the Legislative Assembly in December 2024 that 90% of the works were complete.
The building should have been completed by now to offer services to people. But the government is dilly-dallying on this matter, he pointed out. “The government is not responding to the woes of people,” he alleged, adding that many patients in Udupi district are travelling to Dakshina Kannada’s district hospital in Mangaluru to avail treatment. Though the BJP earlier held protests and submitted memoranda to the government, urging it to complete the building, the government did not respond, he alleged.
After visiting the hospital building in January this year, Yashpal Suvarna, Udupi MLA, quoting health department officials, said that the ₹146-crore, seven-storey, three lakh-sq. ft. hospital building still requires ₹30 crore for completion. The hospital also requires additional funds for purchasing beds, medical equipment, and essential instruments, the MLA said.
Pension schemes
Referring to social security pension schemes linked to Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards, Mr. Shetty said that the government should hike the annual income limit from ₹32,000 to ₹1.20 lakh to avail the pension. As the government did not do so, many pensioners in the State are facing the threat of losing their pension due to the cancellation of BPL cards. About 50,000 pensioners in Udupi district are facing this threat, he claimed.
