BJP candidate who supported Godse wins from Chennai in TN urban local body polls

A video of Uma Anandan, a BJP candidate from Chennai’s West Mambalam, openly supporting Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin, Godse, has gone viral. She was mocked on social media when counting began for getting only 8 votes, but she ended up winning in the ward.

The BJP has put in a considerable show in the Tamil Nadu urban local body polls. This comes despite contesting alone away from AIADMK’s umbrella. BJP’s Uma Anandan won from Ward No. 134 in West Mambalam at the heart of Chennai. Uma Anandhan earlier landed in a controversy over an interview she gave to a YouTube channel where she praised Godse and openly supported him.

Counting for the Tamil Nadu urban local body polls were held on Tuesday, February 22. The DMK alliance scored a massive victory by capturing AIADMK’s strongholds, especially in the Kongu belt, acquiring an average 67% votes while AIADMK acquired an average 16%.

What really turned upsetting for DMK supporters was the fact that during the early hours of counting, memes went viral of Uma Anandhan only getting eight votes. She was mocked on social media but she ended up winning in the ward.

She defeated the Congress candidate by 2,036 votes, acquiring 5,539 and pushing the AIADMK candidate to third place. In fact, the BJP has acquired a considerable number of votes in many wards, even acquiring second position.

When asked about it, CM Stalin said that in certain areas people vote for a candidate instead of the party and that he’ll answer after getting the full details. The DMK alliance won in local bodies of both Edapadi K Palanisamy and O Panneerselvam's hometown.

In a statement, AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam stated that the elections were not conducted in a fair manner and the results are not the reflections of the people’s wish but will still abide by the results. Edapadi K Palanisamy stated that no matter how many hurdles his party had to face, AIADMK would still continue to work for the people.
